The smartwatches shine in the new chic – The Asus Zenwatch

The Asus Zenwatch was announced in September in Berlin, Germany and now its launch has been revealed as early November. There is, however, a catch, it is only planned to be launched in Taiwan and as for the moment only 300 will be made.

Fine watch craftsmanship

Emphasis has been put on the new Asus Zenwatch being made with “premium” materials. It has a genuine stitched leather strap with quick release clasps. The screen itself has a dimension of 1.63 in and is made with curved Gorilla® Glass 3 that encases a bright AMOLED display with a 320 x 320 pixel resolution. There are also more than 100 different designs for the watch face so the look can be tailored to suit the individual.

More than just a Watch

The Asus Zenwatch has a Qualcomm® Snapdragon™ 400 processor with 1.2 GHz CPU as well as 4 GB internal storage and 512 MB of RAM. It pairs easily with any smartphone running Android 4.3. It also has a wide range of apps, including Find My Phone to help find paired smartphones and Presentation Control, which can be used as a remote control and as a time manager. Additionally it has the Cover to Mute function calls where, unsurprisingly, the wearing can simply cover the watch to mute an incoming call.

Wellness Manager

Asus have also jumped on the healthy bandwagon. It includes a “wellness manager” which, when paired with the Asus ZenUI Wellness App, monitors a number of health-related statistics such as steps taken, heart rate, calories burned, exercise intensity and relaxation level. It measures heart rate through a small bio-sensor on the bezel at the front of the watch.

How does it compare

The Asus Zenwatch has focused more on style than previous smartwatches like the Samsung Gear 2; however it has not compromised substance. It possesses many of the features that early tablets did, but at a fraction of the size, it weighs in at just 75 g. It is as pricey as other smartwatches coming in at €199 (around £157) but if only 300 are made and sold in Taiwan then it will never reach a wider market.
