Award winning creative director\u00a0Daniel Burwen<\/a> created the epic app Operation Ajax<\/a> which set a landmark for E – Graphic Novels for the iPad. Great designs and animation meet a stunning story explaining the\u00a0true history of the CIA plot to stage a coup of Iran’s government in 1953. Looking behind the scenes also the production turns out to be epic.<\/p>\n

How did you become an app developer?<\/strong><\/p>\n

By accident. \u00a0When we were looking to publish interactive content on the iPad the app store was the only option. \u00a0I am excited for mobile web to replace the app store as the only option for publishing interactive content to mobile.<\/p>\n

How big were your team and what are the parts?<\/strong><\/p>\n

About 40 of us.<\/p>\n

A core of 2 – 3 animators, a sound designer, a composer, a producer, I creatively directed and managed the art team.<\/p>\n

We had several teams rotate through the layered art, in all about 20 people ended up working on the illustrations.<\/p>\n

Tall Chair was our tech resource, and there was about 9 of them.<\/p>\n

You live in San Francisco. What is the app developer scene there like?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Crowded and competitive. \u00a0Its hard to find engineers, ironically.<\/p>\n

\"AJAX\"<\/a><\/p>\n

\u00a0How did you get inspired to develop Operation Ajax?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Address this in more detail in some of the talks I’ve given, most notably my SXSW talk<\/a>. \u00a0I wanted to prevent war with Iran and I thought that publishing a Graphic novel on Ajax would help educated Americans about the relationship between the US and Iran.<\/p>\n

Jeff Skolls TED<\/a> was also a catalystic moment for me.<\/p>\n

What were the obstacles developing\u00a0Operation Ajax\u00a0and how long did it take?<\/strong><\/p>\n

4.5 years. \u00a0Biggest obstacles was not knowing anything about anything when I started, and not having a good group of experts to ask.<\/p>\n

Story took too long (2 years)<\/p>\n

Tech was hard to use and cumbersome<\/p>\n

Didn’t know about UX<\/p>\n

Didn’t know how to market \/ monetize the product<\/p>\n

The list goes on and on.<\/p>\n

What did you learn from developing this app?<\/strong><\/p>\n

So many things. \u00a0Anything worth doing in life isn’t easy. \u00a0I could write a book alone on this question. Again I defer to my talks.<\/p>\n

\u00a0What tips would you give someone who is just starting out developing apps?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Make it your full time job, and get experts around you to help you figure out if your idea is good. \u00a0Be prepared to lose money, with very little prospects of financial success.<\/p>\n

\u00a0What is your next project and how did you come up with the idea?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I Kill Monsters, a game \/ comic hybrid. \u00a0Came from the process of developing Ajax, and looking for something that was easy to monetize.<\/p>\n

\u00a0Finally, what other app is most fascinating and inspiring to you right now?<\/strong><\/p>\n
